Sit out the front of this redbrick inn and you might even be visited by a wandering New Forest pony. The Fighting Cocks in Godshill is another of the dog-friendly pubs in the Fordingbridge area. Catering to all, it’s one of the New Forest’s most eco-conscious venues, using recyclable paper and glass where possible, their own compost, automatic lighting, and local New Forest Marque produce.

The immediate vicinity played its part in World War II, as where the so-called “bouncing bomb” was tested. Locally, bomb holes from the testing can still be seen today.

If you love old school, rib-sticking desserts you’ll be in heaven here: the desserts board features favourites like sponge puddings, spotted dick and bread-and-butter pudding.

Ideally, head here on a Sunday for the roast dinner, which offers plates piled high with a good range of meat, vegetables and accompaniments. Including, of course, the ubiquitous Yorkshire pudding.

This is a good pub for sports fans, with football shown on a number of screens around the room. A proper British pub with good food, friendly staff, and a very convenient location.

The Compasses Inn, Damerham

The Compasses Inn is situated in Damerham, a village about three-and-a-half miles from Fordingbridge. It’s a multi-purpose venue, offering boutique-style accommodation as well as food and drink served all day.

The Compasses Inn is not only in a picturesque spot, it’s also a place with a real sense of community. Here you can meet the locals while listening to live music, watch the local cricketers playing in summer, and sample food from a five-mile radius where possible.

In addition to the pub bistro menu, featuring the sort of pub fare you might expect, there’s the Nepalese Gurkha Kitchen menu. This showcases spicy curries from Nepal, and other Indian-influenced favourites such as butter chicken, vegetable madras, lamb rogan josh, or prawn dhansak. Deliciously different when you fancy a change.

Not one but three wood burners, plus a heated outdoor dining teepee, help to make The Bat and Ball stand out. There’s also a vast outdoor garden with games for all the family to play. At the time of writing, the pub was also a Great British Pub Awards 2023 finalist, in the Sustainable Pub of the Year category.

One means of reducing food miles employed by The Bat and Ball is to grow their own produce with the help of hydroponics. Staff are happy to to show you around their HydroGrange during your visit.

Food served at The Bat and Ball is British-based, with a South African influence evident in dishes like bobotie, a baked mince dish flavoured with almonds and served with coconut rice, salsa, and chutney.
