The 20 rooms at The White Buck are boutique-style, and offer some deluxe touches. Snug and cosy rooms are smaller, while the junior suite or indulgence room supply more space.
The White Buck offers breakfast, sandwich, kids’, Sunday and main menus. While the range of dishes isn’t huge, there’s sufficient choice for fans of fish, steaks, pies, burgers and salads, plus a couple of more interesting mains such as chicken schnitzel with caesar salad or a risotto containing truffle.

4. Burley Manor
Best for living it up
- Where: 1 Ringwood Road, Burley, Ringwood BH24 4BS
- When: Varies
- Why: Boutique style hotel with a beautiful restaurant and a cosy bar on the edge of the village
- Stay over: Yes
I once spent the evening in the bar at Burley Manor, watching snowflakes swirling around outside, waiting to see if we could get a taxi home or have to stay over. We did make it home, but not before being holed up for a while with a new acquaintance who only went to my old Northumberland high school. Small world.
Anyway, Burley Manor is beautiful both inside and out. Offering boutique-style accommodation, it also has a smart restaurant with wood panelling and polished flooring, plus sweeping views over the grounds from the floor-to-ceiling windows.
There’s a selection of menus to pick from at Burley Manor. These include breakfast, afternoon tea, bar, tapas and lunch menus. Plus Sunday roasts. Food is served fine dining style, with global flavours and elegant execution. For a step up from your average Burley New Forest pubs, snap up a table here.
5. The Wathen Bartlett
Best for community spirit
- Where: The Cross, Burley, Hampshire BH24 4EB
- When: Wednesday and Thursday 10am to 6pm; Friday and Saturday midday to 11pm, Sunday midday to 9pm
- Why: A locally run concern with pool and snooker tables, events and traditional pub food
- Stay over: No
It might seem like an unusual name, but the Wathen Bartlett is named for the former owner of the building this pub is housed in. Today it’s a freehouse with a community feel, and hosts regular events for both locals and visitors. These include live music, dinner and quiz nights, and there’s also snooker and pool tables to play at.
Where The Queen’s Head was once a blacksmith’s, The Wathen Bartlett was originally constructed to house a working men’s club. In 1945, a 999 year lease was gifted to the people of Burley.
These humble beginnings are reflected in the menu at the Wathen Bartlett. Simple basket meals like fish fingers, chicken goujons and sausages are available, alongside sandwiches, baguettes, jacket potatoes and mains like chilli, sausage and mash, scampi or a burger.
